Wilfrido Vargas Y Sus Beduinos - ¡Punto Y Aparte! (1976)
Wilfrido Radames Vargas Martinez was born on April 24, 1949 in the town of Altamira in the Puerto Plata province of the Dominican Republic. A tremendous trumpeter and prolific band leader, Vargas was pivotal in pushing the art of merengue outside the confides of DR to a ears and hearts worldwide, successfully establishing it as a worldwide phenomenon. Merengue is a type of music and dance that developed in the Dominican Republic throughout the mid 1800's. First played on European instruments such as guitars and bandurrias, merengue soon became synonymous with accordions, guiras and tamboras, becoming the essential trinity for the genre. This tasty little number is lifted off his 1978 release 'Punto Y Aparte' (New paragraph').The record was released on Karen Records, a major label in the DR and was distributed by the widely renowned Fania Records. 'Papa Boco' is a steezy little big band merengue number, a cover of Manuel Sanchez Acosta's original released in 1956. This track is a nice, funky change of pace on the record, and closes the album nicely.
