El Combo De Las Estrellas - Sin Comentarios (1976) (Hidden Gem #1)
El Combo De Las Estrellas - 'Sin Comentarios' (1976 Zedia Records)
'El Combo De Las Estrellas' have a long, rich history in pushing Colombian folk standards, pop ballads and various tropical & cumbia styles into the forefront of Colombia's music scene. The group was established in 1974 in Medellin by Humberto Muriel, alongside Jario Paternina and Alvaro Velasquez (all established musicians who had toured internationally). The idea was to form a 'supergroup' of Colombia's best up-and-coming stars to produce some of the country's highest quality tropical music (hence their name literally translating to 'The Combo of the Stars' . They did the damn thing. 'Sin Comentarios' was released in 1976 on Zedia Records, a sublabel of the giant Codiscos label. I picked this bad boy up from Plug Seven Records in Fitzroy, Melbourne. To be honest, as much as I love Latin music, it can hard to find a record that can be played back to front without facing a track or two with teeth-clenching levels of corniness. Although there are some tracks here that I wouldn't necessarily go back to listen to specifically, I can happily say that this album can be enjoyed back to front. An excellent outcome for a $15 foreign gem. The song below, 'Piel De Luna' (or 'Moon Skin') is one of my favourites. Homie sings of a woman with 'moon skin' that takes away his sorrow's yet is his torment. It's got that classic, classy, sultry Latin groove that we all love.
